Saggau Lab

Baylor College of Medicine

Peter Saggau enjoys playing bluegrass cello and has an unnatural phobia of colored socks.
M.S. Cybernetics, Technical University of Munich
Ph.D. Neuroscience, University of Munich

Steve Cox is a professor from the CAAM department of Rice University spending his sabattical here.

Vivek Bansal's current interests are surviving the last year of medical school. His future interests involve incorporating novel imaging modalities into clinical settings with an emphasis on molecular imaging. For his thesis project, he developed a fast addressable confocal microscope using acousto-optic deflectors and a digital micromirror device. Vivek is the consummate Houston Rockets fanatic in addition to playing in a band whose name changes with each gig.
B.S. Electrical Engineering, Case Western Reserve University
Ph.D. Bioengineering, Rice University
candidate for M.D., Baylor College of Medicine

Zanwen Chen is a second year grad student who has recently joined the lab. She enjoys cooking, shopping, playing badminton, running, singing, and dancing.
M.S. Neurohysiology, Peking University, China
candidate for Ph.D. Physiology, Baylor College of Medicine

Rudy Fink's hobbies include getting haircuts and attempting to perform on his phone tasks normally suited to mainframes.
B.S. Computer Science, Rice University

Olga Gliko actually likes the Houston heat.

Vijay Iyer holds the record for largest number of roomates and is the lone remaining Chicago White Sox fan (which might explain why he's cycled through so many roomates).
B.S. Electrical Engineering, Rice University
Ph.D. Electrical Engineering, Rice University

Brad Losavio is interested in single neuron physiology. He believes that the unique biophysical structure provided by dendrites might endow single neurons (in contrast to networks of neurons) with significant computational power. His studies involve optical imaging, traditional electrophysiology, and compartmental modeling. In his spare time, he enjoys woodworking with Japanese hand tools, playing trombone, and hunting and fishing.
B.S. Biochemistry, University of Texas at Austin
candidate for Ph.D. Neuroscience, Baylor College of Medicine

Neel Parikshak's interests span Neuroscience, Biochemistry, and Neuroengineering. Upon graduatation, he'd like to pursue a combined M.D./Ph.D. degree, with a possible focus on understanding neural signals (electrical and biochemical) and eventually utilizing them in medicine. He likes to like to run, eat, and sleep and when his schedule permits, travel.
candidate for B.S. Biochemistry & B.S. Mathematics, Rice University

Saumil Patel is currently Research Assistant Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Houston whose research interests include understanding vision and brain functions. He drives Texas' oldest Honda and once successfully installed Windows 98 on it's air conditioner, which promtly broke (the air conditioner, not Windows 98).
B.S. Electronics, M.S. University, India
M.E. Electrical Engineering, University of Houston
Ph.D. Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Houston

Duemani Reddy is interested in developing new techniques and technologies for understanding brain function. His current project attempts to enhance the study of dendritic integration by developing three-dimensional imaging techniques that are fast enough to record physiological signals from neurons in a specified volume of brain tissue. Duemani is a bad movie aficionado, though he won't admit it.
B.S. Bioengineering,
Johns Hopkins University
candidate for Ph.D. Bioengineering, Rice University
candidate for M.D., Baylor College of Medicine
